John D. Boyer, M.D.

Dr. John D. Boyer is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology, and is an Associate of the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology. In addition to specializing in Mohs micrographic surgery, Dr. Boyer has expertise in the area of facial reconstruction after skin cancer removal and dermatologic surgery.

A native of Coronado Island in San Diego, California, Dr. Boyer graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and Psychology from Occidental College in Los Angeles. In 1987, he received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University School of Medicine, and then completed internship at San Diego’s Balboa Naval Hospital.

In 1988, Dr. Boyer earned his solo wings at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, Florida and served as a U.S. Navy Flight Surgeon for three years, deploying overseas with VP 19 during Operation Desert Storm. He completed a three-year dermatology residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, graduating with distinction in 1995.

Dr. Boyer served as Chief of Dermatology at Pearl Harbor Naval Medical Clinic from 1995 to 1999. He was selected for advanced training in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he completed an intensive one-year fellowship in Mohs Micrographic and Dermatologic Surgery under the nation’s premier cutaneous oncologist, John A. Zitelli, M.D.

Dr. Boyer returned to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland where he was appointed Chief of Dermatologic and Mohs Micrographic Surgery, and Dermatology Consultant and Mohs Surgeon for the Office of the Attending Physician at the U.S. Capitol, serving members of the House of Representatives, Senate, Supreme Court, and White House.

Dr. Boyer entered private practice in July 2002. In order to provide the best possible service to patients with skin cancer, Dr. Boyer focuses his practice on the treatment of malignant and pre-malignant skin conditions, as well as skin cancer screenings. He is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, John A. Burns School of Medicine, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and his research in the area of cutaneous oncology and dermatologic surgery has been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and other peer-reviewed dermatology publications.
